Holocene cooling culminates in sea ice oscillations in Fram Strait

چکیده
A reconstruction of Holocene sea ice conditions in the Fram Strait provides insight into the palaeoenvironmental and palaeoceanographic development of this climate sensitive area during the past 8500 years BP. Organic geochemical analyses of sediment cores from eastern and western Fram Strait enable the identification of variations in the ice coverage that can be linked to changes in the oceanic (and atmospheric) circulation system. By means of the sea ice proxy IP25, phytoplankton-derived biomarkers and ice rafted detritus (IRD) increasing sea ice occurrences are traced along the western continental margin of Spitsbergen throughout the Holocene, which supports previous palaeoenvironmental reconstructions that document a general cooling. A further significant ice advance during the Neoglacial is accompanied by distinct sea ice fluctuations, which point to short-term perturbations in either the Atlantic Water advection or Arctic Water outflow at this site. At the continental shelf of East Greenland, the general Holocene cooling, however, seems to be less pronounced and sea ice conditions remained rather stable. Here, a major Neoglacial increase in sea ice coverage did not occur before 1000 years BP. Phytoplankton-IP25 indices (“PIP25-Index”) are used for more explicit sea ice estimates and display a Mid Holocene shift from a minor sea ice coverage to stable ice margin conditions in eastern Fram Strait, while the inner East Greenland shelf experienced less severe to marginal sea ice occurrences throughout the

The role of Fram Strait winter cyclones on sea ice flux and on Spitsbergen air temperatures
[1] The link between high latitude Atlantic winter cyclone activity and both the climate of Spitsbergen and Fram Strait ice export is examined. Cyclones are more frequent over Fram Strait in relatively mild, low ice export, winters and are associated with south-southwesterly flow around anomalous high pressure over Scandinavia. There is an increased tendency for cyclogenesis to occur off the no...
متن کاملA link between Fram Strait sea ice export and atmospheric planetary wave phase
[1] A link is found between the variability of Fram Strait sea ice export and the phase of zonal wave 1 in SLP for the period 1958– 1997. Previous studies have found that the link between ice export through Fram Strait and the NAO is inconsistent over time scales longer than the last two decades. Inconsistent and low correlations are also found between Fram Strait ice export and the AO index. T...
متن کاملRadionuclides in Arctic sea ice: Tracers of sources, fates and ice transit time scales
Arctic sea ice can incorporate sediment and associated chemical species during its formation in shallow shelf environments and can also intercept atmospherically transported material during transit. Release of this material in ice ablation areas (e.g. the Fram Strait) enhances fluxes of both sediments and associated species in such areas. We have used a suite of natural (Be, Pb) and anthropogen...
متن کاملRecent wind driven high sea ice area export in the Fram Strait contributes to Arctic sea ice decline
Arctic sea ice area has been decreasing for the past two decades. Apart from melting, the southward drift through Fram Strait is the main ice loss mechanism. We present high resolution sea ice drift data across 79 N from 2004 to 2010. Ice drift has been derived from radar satellite data and corresponds well with variability in local geostrophic wind. The underlying East Greenland current contri...
متن کاملNorthern High-Latitude Climate Changes During the Holocene as Simulated by Circulation Models
To simulate the evolution of Holocene climate, forcing factors for the northern high-latitude climate are examined using different numerical models. A global coupled atmosphere–ocean circulation model driven by astronomical forcing over the last 7,000 years shows a long-term sea-surface temperature decrease in the Nordic Seas region associated with changes in seasonal insolation. A continuous c...
